Spreitzer (1995) defines psychological empowerment as intrinsic motivation expressed through four cognitions about work: meaning, competence, self-determination and impact. Unlike structural empowerment (delegation, decentralization), this concept measures the employee's own perceptions. In Vietnam, psychological empowerment often appears in studies of empowering leadership, satisfaction, engagement, job performance and employee innovative behavior.

Frequently asked questions

How many components does psychological empowerment have?

Four: meaning, competence, self-determination and impact, each with 3 items in Spreitzer's (1995) scale.

Should I treat psychological empowerment as one variable or four?

It depends on your hypotheses. If they concern empowerment in general, use a second-order construct; if you want to know which component has the stronger effect, keep the four variables separate.

How does psychological empowerment differ from work motivation?

Psychological empowerment is a form of intrinsic motivation tied to four specific cognitions about work; work motivation is a broader concept that also includes extrinsic motivation such as pay and rewards.
